Razorpay account signup and KYC walkthrough for Indian businesses

Signing up for Razorpay takes under 20 minutes if your documents are ready, and KYC clears in 3 to 4 business days. Here is the full walkthrough: documents, signup, KYC, going live, and the checks worth running before your first real payment.

Key takeaways

  • Account signup takes under 20 minutes if your PAN, bank details, and website or social media page are ready.
  • KYC review takes 3 to 4 business days. You can build and test in Test mode while you wait.
  • Settlements default to T+2 for most categories. Switch to Live API keys before accepting real payments.
  • There is no signup fee. Razorpay charges per transaction, typically about 2% for domestic cards and lower for UPI.

If you are running a practice or a business in India and want to accept online payments, Razorpay is one of the first names you will hear. It handles UPI, cards, net banking, EMI and wallets through a single integration. Getting started takes less than 20 minutes if your documents are ready.

This guide walks you through the full process: sign up, KYC, activation, and a few things worth knowing before you go live.

What You Need Before You Start

Do not start the signup without these on hand. The Razorpay onboarding flow does not let you save and resume mid-section, so gaps in documentation mean re-doing steps.

For all business types

  • Active mobile number (you will receive an OTP)
  • Business PAN card
  • Active bank account in the business name
  • Cancelled cheque or bank statement (for account verification)
  • Your business website, or at least a working social media page

Additional documents by business type

Business Type Extra Documents Needed
Sole Proprietorship Aadhaar card, Shop & Establishment certificate or GST certificate
Partnership Firm Partnership deed, PAN of all partners
Private Limited / LLP Certificate of Incorporation, MoA & AoA, Director PAN

GST number: Not mandatory to get started, but Razorpay will ask for it if your business is GST-registered. Keep it ready.

Step 1: Create Your Razorpay Account

1.1 Go to the Razorpay website

Head to razorpay.com and click Get Started in the top right. This takes you directly to the signup form.

1.2 Enter your contact details

You have three options:

  • Enter your mobile number and verify via OTP
  • Enter your email address
  • Sign up with your Google account (fastest if you want to skip the OTP step)

Select India under Where is your company registered? and click Continue.

If you went with mobile or email, enter the OTP Razorpay sends. It usually arrives in under 10 seconds. If it does not, wait 30 seconds and hit Resend OTP. Once verified, enter your full name and click Continue.

1.3 Fill in basic business details

This is where Razorpay starts building your merchant profile.

  1. Your Name: your legal name as the account holder
  2. Legal Business Name: the registered name of your entity. If you are a freelancer or sole proprietor, your own name works here
  3. Doing Business As (DBA): if your brand name differs from the legal name, enter it here. If they match, check the Brand name is same as legal business name box
  4. Business Type: select from the dropdown: Individual, Sole Proprietorship, Partnership, Private Limited, LLP, NGO, Trust, and so on
  5. Personal Phone Number: your direct contact number

Review everything before clicking Continue, especially the legal business name. It needs to match your PAN and bank account exactly.

1.4 Enter business details

This section is for the Razorpay compliance and verification team.

  1. PAN Number: your business PAN, or personal PAN if you are a sole proprietor or individual
  2. Date of Incorporation: the date your business was registered. For sole proprietors, this can be your business registration date
  3. GSTIN: optional, but include it if you have one
  4. Website URL: Razorpay requires a live URL. If you do not have a website yet, a Facebook business page, Instagram profile, or LinkedIn company page works. It needs to be publicly accessible
  5. Business Description: a clear, specific sentence or two about what your business does and what you sell. Vague entries like "e-commerce" slow down the verification
  6. Business Phone Number
  7. Business Category and Sub-category: pick the closest match. This affects which payment methods you get access to

Then add your registered business address. Razorpay requires a physical address, and P.O. boxes are not accepted.

1.5 Add bank account details

This is your settlement account, where Razorpay deposits collected payments.

  1. Account Holder Name: must match the name on the bank account
  2. IFSC Code: the 11-character code on your cheque book or passbook
  3. Account Number: double-check this. Entering the wrong number means payments settle into the wrong account

Razorpay verifies the account using a penny drop test: it deposits ₹1 into the account and immediately withdraws it to confirm the details are correct.

Important: The bank account must be in the name of the business entity. For sole proprietors, a personal savings account works if it is in your name.

1.6 Transaction details

The last signup section asks about your expected payment volumes. Razorpay uses this to calibrate limits and flag anomalies.

  1. Annual Payment Volume: your best estimate of yearly revenue collected via Razorpay
  2. Average Transaction Amount: typical order size
  3. Maximum Transaction Amount: your largest expected single transaction
  4. Channel Split: online versus offline percentage
  5. Customer Type: B2B versus B2C percentage

These numbers are not binding, but be reasonably accurate. Very large discrepancies between declared and actual volumes can trigger a manual review later. Click Submit. Your account is now created.

Step 2: Submit KYC Documents

Account creation gets you access to Test mode, a sandbox where you can integrate Razorpay and test payment flows without real money. To collect actual payments, you need to complete KYC.

How KYC works

CKYC (Central KYC): If your PAN is already verified in the central KYC registry of India, the process is largely automated. Razorpay fetches your KYC data from the CKYC database and cross-checks it against what you submitted.

Video KYC: If CKYC data is not available or there is a mismatch, you will be asked to complete a short video call with a Razorpay agent. They verify your identity and business documents in real time. The call typically takes 5 to 10 minutes.

What happens during KYC review

After submission, the Razorpay operations team reviews your documents. This takes 3 to 4 business days on average. You will receive an email and SMS when the review is complete.

During this window you can still:

  • Explore the Razorpay Dashboard
  • Generate API keys for Test mode
  • Build and test your payment integration

Step 3: Go Live

Once KYC is approved, your account switches to Live mode automatically.

What changes after activation:

  • Payment collection is enabled with no upper limit on transaction amount
  • Razorpay settles payments to your bank account per your settlement cycle (T+2 by default for most categories)
  • You can request additional payment methods such as international cards, specific wallets and BNPL options

One thing to note: Your Test mode API keys and Live mode API keys are different. Generate Live API keys from Settings → API Keys → Generate Key before you go live. Using Test keys in production is a common mistake that results in payments failing silently.

Setting Up Multiple Accounts

If you run multiple businesses, or need separate accounts for different projects under the same entity, the Razorpay Multi-Account feature lets you create additional accounts using the same mobile number and email.

Via the Razorpay website

  1. Go to razorpay.com and click Sign Up
  2. Enter your registered mobile number or email
  3. Complete OTP verification
  4. All existing accounts tied to your number appear on screen
  5. Click Create a New Account
  6. Select your country and continue with the standard signup flow

Via the Dashboard, if already logged in

  1. Click the profile icon in the top right
  2. Select Switch Merchant
  3. Click Create A New Account

Watch out: If your mobile number is linked to multiple accounts under different email IDs, the Multi-Account feature gets blocked. In that case, use a different mobile number or sign up with email directly.

After You Are Live: First Things to Check

Before your first real transaction, run through this quick checklist:

  • ✓Generate and update Live API keys in your integration
  • ✓Test a real payment end to end, a ₹1 transaction from your own card or UPI
  • ✓Set up webhooks in Settings → Webhooks to handle payment status updates in your backend
  • ✓Review your settlement schedule in Settings → Settlements
  • ✓Enable the payment methods that match your customers: cards, UPI, net banking, wallets

Common Questions

How long does it take to start collecting payments?

Account creation takes under 20 minutes. KYC verification takes 3 to 4 business days. You can build and test your integration in Test mode while waiting.

Can I use Razorpay without a website?

Yes. A social media profile on Instagram, Facebook, or LinkedIn is acceptable during signup. You can also use Razorpay Payment Links and Payment Pages without any integration, so no website or code is required.

What if my KYC gets rejected?

Razorpay sends an email explaining the reason. Common causes are a mismatch between the PAN name and the bank account name, a blurry document upload, or an inaccessible website URL. Fix the issue and resubmit through the Dashboard under Account → KYC.

Is there a signup fee?

No. Razorpay charges a per-transaction fee, typically 2 percent for domestic cards and lower for UPI, after your account is active. There is no monthly fee for the standard plan.

Can I accept international payments?

International payments require a separate activation. Once your account is live, apply for international payment enablement from Settings → Payment Methods → International Payments. Approval typically takes 5 to 7 business days and requires additional documentation.
